points, aiglettes, tag-ends by post

These little cones are used to finish off hand and machine-made cords.

Historically they are seen in particular on medieval, Elizabethan and 17th century clothing of men and women. Here they, (points / cords), are used to lace up clothes where we would have zips, and to tie on clothing items such as sleeves, ruffs and codpieces. They were also used decoratively on the ends of fancy silk ribbons and cords made of precious materials. The higher up the social scale you were the more elaborate your clothes, and the more elaborate your jewellery, including your points.

Today they are also used in modern jewellery designs and in making hat pins and creative embroidery projects and on shoe laces. In dress-making and tailoring they are still used at the ends of cords in windcheaters and anoraks.

Points / aiglettes / tag-ends can be fixed onto cord or ribbon with PVA glue and then sewing through the hole in the side, and maybe adding beads or pearls for the upper class. In the historically authentic manner they are fixed by riveting through the hole.

Gold Braid Shop

This is the Gold Braid Shop. I have loads of different styles and widths; there are just a few more than shown here. The gird behind the braid is 1cm, 0.5cm and the smallest division is 1mm.

Most braids, (also known historically as 'lace'), are antique or vintage and some are pre-used: any flaws will be notified. They are of limited quantity, and when sold out cannot be repeated. There is no wholesale.

Please email with a photograph of the braid you require, the length and, if it is for a costume, which historical period. No sales under 1 metre or parts of a metre, unless only a small length remains. Prices are plus postage, at PO rates. Sale to UK only.
braid at createthemood dot uklinux dot net

I also have many silver metallic braids, and braids in most other colours. But my life is not long enough to photograph every single reel.

haberdashery - metal decorations

These cast metal decorations can be used to sew onto fabric or, the more robust, to make jewellery. All jewels are plastic and are glued in place; they may be levered out and replaced by any flat-backed substitutes. Where possible I have photographed fronts and backs of the decorations.

The squares behind the decorations are 1" (2.54cm); the graph paper large squares are 1cm and 0.5cm.

For sale to the UK only.

Frogs for fabric

Not the sort that go 'gark gark' but the sort that decorate and fasten your jacket or bodice.

These are the pairs currently in stock. Almost any can be sourced to suit your needs. Please ask. Not all frogs actually open and close with the loop over the ball, some are just decorative.

You may find that a metal hook and eye are needed at the top or base of the opening fastened with your frogs; this will keep the edges from moving out of alignment.

Prices do not include postage, which should not be more than 75p; to the UK only.

The Big Button Shop

Big buttons for all situations; wood, metal, sheepskin, leather, mother of pearl, old plastic ..... . Most are vintage items and have been used; modern and new buttons are listed as such.

Buttons are still being added, so the site will change over the next few months.

I do not recommend that you wash these buttons; even if they are described as plastic the colour can run. I do not guarentee that the colour is the same as in the photogrpahs, even when I have not commented on this. Your computer screen can change the colour.

Please note that I do not split sets. Number of buttons in each set is given in brackets ( ) in the description under each photograph.

The grid behind the images is 1" (2.54cm).

This is part of Historic Haberdashery online; on sale to the UK only. Add post and packaging - around 75p per item. Please email your order together with the picture of your button, and the 's' number, if given after the price. When you receive confirmation of your order and p&p please pay by cheque made out to F Tucker. Postal Orders also accepted; sterling only.
